“I wish I could read more, I’m just not the reading type.” Should we put it to the test? With these three tips, you might find yourself the be the reader you never knew you could be.

I wasn’t always the reading type
Can you believe I wasn’t the reading type? But it has become one of the many enjoyments of my life and the more I read the more I take from these Novels.
Whether it be a sense of community, a gift to your creativity, a moment in peace or a remodel to the limits we set from our personal perspectives. It doesn’t matter. Reading more will add value to your life that you never knew you needed.
But if you have never been the reading type, how can you become a person who reads often if not daily? Is it possible to find enjoyment in something you may have loathed as a kid?
If I can become someone who enjoys reading, why can’t you if you set your mind to it?
Discover your inner Reader
- Find books you enjoy. This might feel obvious but it’s not. Often, my bookshelves will fill up with textbooks and career-based non-fiction books that I almost consistently fall asleep while reading. While it’s important to read those types of books especially when advancing in a skill or career, it’s not going to umph up your urge to hit the books. Whereas, a horror hit like Lone Women by Victor LaValle is something you won’t want to put down.
- Utilize the library. As much as I love when you purchase novels through my links, don’t forget about the Library and it’s app Libby. The library is aesthetic, fun, resourceful. You’ll be around like-minded people and kids really enjoy going too. You can try all sorts of books for free!
- Find the perfect time to read and it’s almost never right before bed. I like to read right when I wake up, while I have my coffee. As someone who is especially anxious, I find it is a soft start to my day. I like to read before bed too but for someone trying to build a habit you’ll most likely fall asleep. (Unless you need something to put you to sleep then reading before bed is perfect. Add in one of those “career building” books and you’ll cash out before you get three pages in).
- My suggestion is to read to start your day or replace a doom-scrolling session. You could read while your skincare sets, while you have your coffee, when you get home from work for an hour or so.
- If you enjoy apps like Apple Books or Audible you can try listening to a book when your doing your nails, cleaning your house, or applying your makeup.
- Soft music can help you stay focused and add to the drama if you are reading something fun. I like piano musical, instrumental, or I’ll type “reading playlist” and explore the options on Spotify. This really helps keep my mind in the zone by cutting out distractions.
When discussing my enjoyment of reading for fun, I often get the response, “I’m just not a book person” and that is totally okay. Some people aren’t. However, if you want to be, it is totally possible. All you need is a little patience and some commitment to a reading routine. I wasn’t always the biggest reader and I didn’t always love books, until one day I did. The magic comes when you find something truly enticing, you just need to find what that means for you.
