Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor

Dove Baker| Books+ Fiction+ Sci-Fi

Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor was unlike any I have ever read and I really liked it. I didn’t realize I was such a Sci-Fi girly until recently (but I am not complaining). Aside from this book being such a great read, which we will get into, I have to admire the cover art. It gives so much into the story. Before reading it comes off as mysterious but after reading, it is gorgeous. The girl’s face so sad but strong, the gold hoops, the green glow, and the connection with nature.

A Bit about

Imagine you are a four-year-old Fatima fighting off a fever, running around Ghana with your older brother Fenuku, basking in your parents love and the sense of community in your village. Imagine you love trees, homemade shea butter, and one day you receive a gift from the sky. Then three years later, that and everything you were is ripped from your hands. You are now a stranded seven-year-old girl with a dead family, destroyed village, and a lethal power that prevents you from getting close to anyone else aside from a fox weary enough to keep it’s distance. The citizens of Ghana treat you as a monster or a weapon to be utilized. All a girl can do is make her way through the African landscapes in seek of answers.

What to know

  • Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor is African-futurism which is a subcategory of science-fiction.
  • It is a novella, so it’s short (only 159 pages).
  • It is so well written, it’s easy to just fall into it. Even if it isn’t a genre you normally like. (Although I am noticing more and more science-fiction on my shelf).
  • The cover is telling. I know we aren’t suppose to judge a book by it’s cover, but this cover was intentional and well-thought. I love it.
